As part of Green Ribbon Month Officer Jared Chuchran and Corporal Bruce Champagne, both with the Saratoga Springs, Utah police department, walked nearly 200 children to school Monday morning.
“We’re hoping we can reduce auto-pedestrian accidents by teaching children the rules of the road as well as reminding drivers to slow down for children,“ said Julie King, PTA safety and welfare co-commissioner.
Harvest Elementary School only has one bus for the school, which means that almost all of the kids walk or are driven to school.
“We want kids and parents to recognize it is safe to walk to school,“ said Kelsey Watson, PTA safety and welfare co-commissioner.
The Green Ribbon Month Campaign is a program that focuses on children’s pedestrian safety. In the 1990s, 75 Utah children were killed in auto-pedestrian crashes. Michael Leavitt, the governor at the time, signed a proclamation designating September as Green Ribbon Month in Utah.
